Sustainability Manifesto

Since its inception in 2014, Grindsmith have strived to reduce its impact on the planet.

When we started the roastery in 2018 we decided to purchase a Loring Smart Roaster S15 Falcon, it not only ensures exceptional coffee quality but also delivers up to 80% fuel savings, significantly reducing our carbon footprint compared to conventional roasters. This underscores our dedication to both craftsmanship and environmental responsibility in our coffee roasting process. Additionally, our commitment to environmental responsibility extends to utilising reusable tubs for wholesale customers, minimising landfill impact. It is estimated that in 2023 using the reusable tubs prevented 15,000 items of packaging or the equivalent to 500kg entering the waste stream from removing coffee packaging for our key accounts.  Waste produced during the roasting process is separated to food waste stream and then is utilised by B&M waste for bio fuel.
In collaboration with DR Wakefield and Covoya coffee, we prioritise sustainable sourcing practices, emphasising ethical and eco-friendly approaches throughout the supply chain. All coffee that is purchased is fully traceable back to source with the commitment of both these importers to pay above sustainable pricing for any coffee lots. We have the information available for all our products and the individual farms we purchase from. We make a conscious aim to look out for farms that focus on their environmental credentials and employee welfare.
Furthermore, our delivery operations are eco-conscious, employing a hybrid vehicle that contributes to lower emissions and supports our commitment to a greener future. Where possible we deliver to our wholesale clients and have made a conscious decision to supply 80% of our wholesale customer base within 20 miles of the base, removing the need for postage, packaging and fuel to deliver coffee orders. We care about our locality and love to work with customers who want to be a part of the micro-economy who help reduce our footprint, while strengthening businesses within Greater Manchester.
